The role of good pest control in the fight to preserve public health is a vital one. Disease carrying and destructive insects and rodents throughout the world cause unnecessary loss of life and suffering as well as expensive damage to food supplies and property.

For this reason public pest control is of fundamental importance in safeguarding our environment.

Prevention and control of insect infestations depend on accurate identification of the pest causing trouble and a knowledge of their habits and biology. Only with this as a foundation can a rational pest control programme be devised including the prescription of the most effective and safe insecticides and the use of efficient application techniques. It must be appreciated that pests are always seeking food and shelter and that insects and rodents can breed and multiply very quickly.

Wherever food is stored, processed or served, there is a special responsibility for management to ensure the highest standard of hygiene and cleanliness. Only then can pest control be fully effective. The main points in an effective sanitation programme are:

  • Maintain storage places in sound condition.
  • Keep storage areas free from cracks, crevices and other places where pests can breed without disturbance.
  • Make sure doors and windows close properly and that these and other places of access are effectively screened and proofed.
  • Ensure that outside areas adjacent to the premises are kept clean and tidy and free from weeds and rubbish, which provide harborage and concealment for rodents and other pests.
  • Keep goods off the floor on dunnage and if possible, away from the walls.
  • Make sure that plant, equipment, floors etc., are regularly swept and cleaned.
  • Effective sanitation is essentially good housekeeping and must be a regular, daily routine.
